Mario Hollands will not need elbow surgery
Phillies pitcher Mario Hollands is out for the season, but he will not need surgery to repair a Grade 2 flexor strain in his left elbow, MLB.com reports Friday.
Hollands will take six weeks off before throwing a baseball, as the prescription for the injury at this point is just rest. He finished the season with a 4.40 ERA in 50 appearances as a reliever, and manager Ryne Sandberg acknowledged the team came away impressed with what he gave them this season.
"I think overall he was a pleasant surprise," Sandberg said. "He really came a long way. When he had his good fastball of 92-94 [mph], and throwing his breaking pitch in the strike zone, he was very effective. I think all in all, it was an experience year for him, and I thought that he did a nice job overall. And he really came a long way."
