Can the Seattle Mariners play the Royals more often? Kevin Millwood pitched well on July 28, and the Mariners held on to win 4-3. So far this season, the Mariners are 6-1 against Kansas City, and they will look for a four-game sweep when they host the Royals on July 29. With Felix Hernandez heading to the hill, there is a pretty good chance that the Mariners will be able to finish off KC in front of the home fans. Hopefully a decent crowd will show up.
You have to wonder if this was a final showcase game for pitcher Kevin Millwood. The veteran Millwood has pitched well in his last two starts, and there may be a few teams out there that are looking for another experienced arm. I would be surprised if the Mariners could get very much for Millwood, but I also don't expect them to re-sign Kevin in the offseason.
Looking to the deadline
The other player that is rumored to be on the block is Jason Vargas. I actually think it would be a mistake to send Vargas away for a couple of prospects. Vargas is not necessarily a top-of-the-rotation pitcher, but he is a solid veteran and I think he may be the type of guy that the Mariners regret trading to a contender. If the Mariners trade Jason, I just don't see them getting a lot in return.
Due to their three-game winning streak, the Mariners now have a 1.2% chance of making the playoffs. This is the tough part of the long baseball season. Seattle has an opportunity to look at young players and get them some experience, but the season is essentially over at the end of July. Yes, the Mariners could catch fire and make things interesting, but they are 14 games back in the American League West. Of course, they are only 10 games back in the wild card standings. Dare to dream?
