Marcos Ambrose is still waiting for a contract with Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM). His teammate, Aric Almirola, is in the same situation, and RPM is in the process of negotiating a deal with Ford. Despite switching the crew chiefs for the Almirola and Ambrose teams, Richard Petty has not made any other announcements.
Marcos Ambrose and Richard Petty Motorsports
Ambrose does not have a contract for 2013 with RPM, but he has previously stated that he has not been considering other teams. After spending two years with Richard Petty Motorsports, Ambrose wants to return next year. Petty has also stated that he wants Ambrose back in the No. 9 car for 2013.
Crew Chief Changes for Richard Petty Motorsports
Although he has won two poles and one race in the 2012 Sprint Cup Series, Marcos Ambrose is not part of the Chase because he is in 15th place in the Sprint Cup standings. RPM has decided that switching the crew chiefs for the No. 9 and No. 43 cars, so Ambrose would get Mike Ford, and Almirola would get Todd Parrott, could benefit the team for the rest of the season. With both of its drivers not in the Chase, Richard Petty Motorsports can experiment with the team members.
RPM is Waiting for a Deal with Ford
The delay in offering Marcos Ambrose a contract for 2013 seems to be tied to the deal with Ford. Richard Petty is still in the process of negotiating with the car manufacturer for the next NASCAR season. RPM was previously linked to Dodge, before the company decided to sit out 2013, and Petty is rumored to have been talking with Chevrolet. These reports have not been confirmed while RPM insists it is still working with Ford on a new contract.
Marcos Ambrose's position with RPM seems safe for next season, but Aric Almirola may be in jeopardy. Richard Petty mentioned Almirola and said, "I think it was a one-year contract." However, RPM has stated that the team wants two cars next season. Unfortunately, sponsorships and money will ultimately decide the fate of the drivers.
