On Sunday, August 12, 2012, the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers raced in the Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen, which was held at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York. The race was one of just a few road course races that the Sprint Cup drivers visit. In a race that ended somewhat like the previous year's race, Marcos Ambrose took the victory after making a last minute pass. In the final lap, Kyle Busch's oil leak caused him to spin out and left Brad Keselowski with the lead. Ambrose was not too far behind. Before the lap ended, Ambrose made his move and took the lead and the victory.
The Chase for the Cup is starting to heat up. With just two races left to go in the season before the Chase begins, there are still several drivers in the running to make it. Currently, Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Clint Bowyer, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin are in the top ten and poised to make the Chase. Kasey Kahne, currently in 11th, and Ryan Newman, currently in 13th, are in position to take the wildcard slots. The current standings are not set in stone and a win or even high finish by certain other drivers could shake things up considerably. Thanks to the victory, Ambrose is one of those drivers who can still make the Chase.
This is the exciting time of the season. Though the end of the season can be fun too, it always seems like this is when the drivers are at their most competitive. There is a larger field of drivers looking for one of the coveted spots and, often, it seems like there are more opportunities for the drivers to shuffle around. In the Chase for the Cup, often there are just two or three drivers going for the top spot. During the time leading up to the Chase, often there are several drivers that could make the wildcard spots or the top ten. A few points or one win may separate the drivers.
Kristin Watt has been a NASCAR Winston Cup, now Sprint Cup, fan for as long as she can remember starting way back when she was a little girl and her mother would sit on the couch with her every Sunday during the season to watch the races. Back then, they were fans of Bill Elliott and newcomer Davey Allison.
