Maple Leafs sign center, defenseman

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed center Jay McClement to a two-year contract Sunday.

The team also announced the signing of minor-league defenseman Mike Kostka to a one-year deal.

McClement, a second-round draft pick by the St. Louis Blues in 2001, comes to the Leafs from the Colorado Avalanche, where he played the past two seasons. His contract is worth $3 million over the next two seasons, TSN.com reported.

The 29-year-old had 10 goals and 17 points and went 51.3 percent on faceoffs. He also led the Avalanche in short-handed minutes per game.

Kostka, 26, played for Norfolk and San Antonio this past season. He led AHL defensemen in playoff scoring with 12 points.
