Maple Leafs find their backup goalie in Jhonas Enroth
It was a busy Monday for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who after promoting Mark Hunter from Director of Player Personnel to Assistant General Manager finally signed a backup goaltender for Frederik Andersen.
After spending last season with the Los Angeles Kings, Jhonas Enroth will move to Toronto after inking a one-year, $750,000 deal with the Leafs.
The deal was a long-time coming after reports from Sweden a month ago had the two sides closing in on an agreement. Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello said that after the team dealt Jonathan Bernier to Anaheim last month he was planning to go out and acquire a backup and not rely on Antoine Bibeau, Kasimir Kaskisuo or Garret Sparks in that role.
The 28-year-old Enroth put up a .937 even strength save percentage in 16 games last year behind Jonathan Quick and has posted a .923 in 94 games since the start of the 2013-14 NHL season. He could have the opportunity to get more action this coming season since Andersen has averaged 45 starts the last two seasons.
According to General Fanager, this signing puts the Leafs nearly $700,000 over the cap for the moment. Nathan Horton and Stephane Robidas could be placed on LTIR later on to provide a bit of a cushion under the ceiling.
