Who are the reigning champions?

Manchester City were the winners last season, beating Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool on penalties.

The trophy proved to be Manuel Pellegrini's last as manager of Manchester City as the Chilean made way for the incoming Pep Guardiola in July.

Manchester City's back up goalkeeper Willy Caballero was the hero last year as the Spaniard saved three of the four Liverpool spot-kicks he faced to hand City victory following a tense penalty shootout.

This year Manchester United will look to ensure the trophy stays in Manchester, while Southampton - who shocked Liverpool in the semi-finals - will be hoping to pull off their first Cup triumph in over 40 years.

How did both teams reach the final?

Manchester United managed to overcome Hull City to book their place at Wembley on Thursday evening.

Jose Mourinho's men lost their 17-match unbeaten run as Hull earned a 2-1 win on the night - enough for Manchester United to reach the final 3-1 on aggregate.

Tom Huddlestone had initially given Hull hope in the tie, scoring from the penalty spot to reduce their two-goal deficit from the first leg at Old Trafford.

The Hull midfielder cooly gave the home side the lead on the night after Marcos Rojo was harshly adjudged to have brought down Harry Maguire in the area.

However Paul Pogba's toe-poked effort drew United level on the night and gave Jose Mourinho's a two goal cushion in the tie.

Hull were given late hope of a comeback when Oumar Niasse converted David Meyler's well-cushioned cross.

Manchester United were able to hang on, however, booking their place at Wembley with a 3-2 win on aggregate.

Southampton earned themselves their first visit to Wembley in over 40 years as Shane Long's late goal gave Claude Puel's a 2-0 aggregate win over Liverpool.

The south-coast club have the distinction of reaching the EFL Cup final without conceding a single goal en route.

Nathan Redmond scored the only goal in a tense first leg the St Mary's meaning Liverpool at least had to score in the return leg if they hoped to stay in the EFL Cup.

However Liverpool were unable to breakdown a resolute Southampton back-line that had to do without their centre back and player of the season so far, Virgil van Djik.
