A's manager Melvin receives contract extension

The Oakland A's gave manager Bob Melvin a two-year contract extension Monday that runs through the 2016 season.

Melvin led the A's, with the lowest payroll in the majors at $59.5 million, to the American League West title last season with a 94-68 record. He was named AL Manager of the Year.

Oakland reached the playoffs for the first time since 2006 with an incredible comeback, passing Texas to win the division after trailing by five games in the final 10 days of the regular season. The rookie-laden A's then lost to Detroit in a five-game AL divisional series.

Melvin, 51, joined the A's midway through the 2011 season. He also has managed the Seattle Mariners (156-168) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (337-340), leading the Diamondbacks to the National League West title in 2007.
