Majority of Mexico squad already set?

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera stated this week that he will name the 23 players he will take to the World Cup on May 9 – despite the June 2 FIFA deadline – but he may have the bulk of the places already defined, at least according to a report by Fox Sports’ La Ultima Palabra.

The show published an article Thursday indicating that 19 players already have a secure place in the squad, with Herrera having doubts only about the last four spots.

Of the debates Herrera still has, one centers around whether Guillermo Ochoa or Moises Munoz will take the last goalkeeper’s spot.

In defense, Juan Carlos Valenzuela, Enrique Perez and Miguel Ponce are looking to secure places, while Giovani Dos Santos and Marco Fabian are fighting for one spot.

Javier Aquino appears to be out of the picture altogether.

The confirmed players, according to the report, are Jesus Corona and Alfredo Talavera in goal; Diego Reyes, Rafael Marquez, Hector Moreno, Francisco Rodriguez, Miguel Layun and Paul Aguilar in defense; Andres Guardado, Juan Carlos Medina, Carlos Pena, Jose Juan Vazquez, Luis Montes and Hector Herrera in midfield, with Isaac Brizuela, Oribe Peralta, Raul Jimenez, Javier Hernandez and Alan Pulido the forwards.
