Lue becomes NBA's highest-paid assistant

The SportsXchange

The Cleveland Cavaliers made Tyronn Lue the highest-paid assistant in NBA history with a four-year, $6.5 million deal, Yahoo Sports reported Wednesday.

Terms of the deal include an average of $1.375 million in the first two years, $1.75 million in the third year and $2 million in the final year, according to the Yahoo report. The team holds an option on the fourth year.

Lue was a finalist for the Cavs' head coaching job that went to former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt. A former Los Angeles Clippers assistant, Lue is expected to help Blatt acclimate to the NBA after coaching in Europe.

The 37-year-old Lue left the Los Angeles Clippers staff of Doc Rivers to take the job in Cleveland. He worked for five years under Rivers with the Clippers and Boston Celtics.

Before getting into coaching, Lue spent 11 years in the NBA with seven teams as a player, winning championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and 2001.
