Ben Averkamp joined the 1,000-point club and Loyola kept Toledo at an arm's length most of the night to open the 2012 season with a 62-50 victory at Gentile Arena. Averkamp, a senior forward, had the 11 points he needed to hit 1,000 on the second possession of the second half for the Ramblers. He led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds, and now stands just 16 boards shy of 500 for his career. Loyola shot just 38.9 percent from the field but Averkamp and junior guard Cully Payne combined to make 12 of 14 foul shots and the Ramblers kept the Rockets off the glass. Guard Julius Brown had 15 points to pace Toledo, which won 19 games last season and played in the CIT postseason tournament in March.
