Los Angeles Galaxy CONCACAF Champions League 2012-2013 Schedule Released: Fan's Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

The Los Angeles Galaxy learned the full CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) 2012-2013 schedule on June 22. The Caribbean Championship has wrapped up and NASL side Puerto Rico Islanders claimed the final CCL spot in Group 5 with a 2-0 win over Antigua Barracuda FC in the third-place match of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship. The Galaxy also have to play El Salvador's Isidro Metapan in Group 5.

The Islanders will be making their fifth CCL appearance in a row. They will play home-and-home matches with the Galaxy and Isidro Metapan this fall and the winner of the group will advance to the quarterfinals of the competition next spring.

Here's the Group 5 match schedule:

Wednesday, August 1

Isidro Metapan vs. Puerto Rico Islanders, 10 p.m.

Thursday, August 23

LA Galaxy vs. Isidro Metapan, 10 p.m.

Wednesday, August 29

LA Galaxy vs. Puerto Rico Islanders, 10 p.m.

Wednesday, September 19

Puerto Rico Islanders vs. LA Galaxy, 8 p.m.

Thursday, September 27

Puerto Rico Islanders vs. Isidro Metapan, 8 p.m.

Thursday, October 25

Isidro Metapan vs. LA Galaxy, 10 p.m.

Galaxy fans are familiar with the Islanders from the 2010-2011 version of the CCL when the NASL side shocked L.A. with a 4-1 victory at the Home Depot Center. The Galaxy won the return leg but not by enough goals to avoid being bounced from the competition. Seeing the Islanders in this slot is a bit of a surprise as they had been in the Caribbean final for the last three seasons, winning twice.

Now that the CCL schedule has been set, the late-August, early-September calendar for the Galaxy will be crowded. Three days after the opener against Metapan, our side has an MLS match against FC Dallas. Three days after the Dallas match, L.A. will play the Islanders before a September 1 match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. I'd like to see the Galaxy take the CCL seriously so it's unfortunate that they may have to decide which matches to prioritize.

The Galaxy have never gotten past the quarterfinals of the CCL. Last season, our side fell to Toronto FC in the quarterfinals, 4-3, on aggregate.
