Looks and Touches: Week 10

The following is a list of the Week 10 leaders in looks and touches. It defines those running backs and receivers who received the most attention this past weekend.

Touches is defined as the number of times a running back carried or caught the football.
Looks is defined as the number of times a player was the intended target of a pass.

TOUCHES
Clinton Portis led the league in touches for the second consecutive week. After averaging 19 touches and 84 yards of offense over his first seven games, Portis has averaged 35 touches and 177 yards of offense over the past two weeks. On the season, he's fourth in the league in touches (204 – 181 carries, 23 catches) and sixth in total yards among RB (942 – 766 rushing, 176 receiving).

Cedric Benson's career-high 31 touches (29 carries, two catches) in Week 10 resulted in just 97 yards of offense thanks to 2.6-yards per carry, although he did score on a three-yard run. On the season, Benson is eighth in the league in touches (194 – 178 carries, 16 catches) but 15th in total offense (667 – 542 rushing, 125 receiving) thanks to his 3.0-yard average per carry, which ranks him worst among the 22 RB with at last 100 carries on the season.

Ryan Grant is getting it done for the Packers. He totaled 139 yards of offense (119 rushing, 20 receiving) on his 30 touches (25 carries, five catches) and scored his first TD of the season in Week 10, and has averaged 114 yards of offense on 26 touches over the past three weeks for Green Bay.

Priest Holmes' first start since early in the 2005 season was quite a feel-good story, but it didn't exactly translate into success on the field. He totaled 79 yards of offense (65 rushing, 14 receiving) on 22 touches (20 carries, two catches), managing 3.3 yards per carry against a Broncos defense that has allowed a league-worst 4.8 yards per carry to its opposition on the season.

• The platoon watch notes when a team's RB2 is given at least half as many touches as the RB1, regardless of the reason. Platoon watch for Week 10 included just four teams: Cincinnati (Rudi Johnson 23, Kenny Watson 12), Dallas (Marion Barber 15, Julius Jones 11), Jacksonville (Maurice Jones-Drew 22, Fred Taylor 16), and Tennessee (LenDale White 9, Chris Henry 5).

Brian Westbrook had one of his trademark games and led all RB with at least ten touches in Week 10 in yards per touch. He totaled 183 yards of offense (100 rushing, 83 receiving) on his 25 touches (20 carries, five catches), good for a 7.32-yard average. Rudi Johnson once again came in on the low end of the spectrum – he totaled 48 yards of offense (46 rushing, two receiving) on his 23 touches (22 carries, one catch), just a 2.09-yard average.

LOOKS
Reggie Wayne continues to shine in Marvin Harrison's absence. He had a league-high 18 looks in Week 10, which turned into 10 catches for a league-high 140 yards and a score. In the five games since Marvin Harrison's injury, Wayne has averaged 12 looks, 7.6 catches, 112.6 receiving yards, and 0.6 TD.

Jeremy Shockey turned in his first big game in what has been a largely disappointing season. He had season highs in looks (14), catches (12, also a career high), and receiving yards (129, matching a career high) in Week 10, while also scoring his third TD of the season. Entering Week 10, Shockey had been averaging 3.9 catches on 6.4 looks, 44.8 receiving yards, and had two TD in eight games.

Marques Colston's resurgence, not surprisingly, has been directly tied to the turnaround of the Saints offense as a whole. He averaged 4.3 catches on 7.2 looks for 43.8 yards and had two TD in the season's first six games, and the Saints averaged 16.8 points; over the past three games, Colston has averaged 8.7 catches on 12.3 looks for 123.3 yards, with three TD (all in one game), as the Saints have averaged 33.6 points

• The free-fall continued for the 49ers in Week 10, as they lost their seventh straight game, and the nightmare season continues for Darrell Jackson. While he did play at less than 100 percent on Sunday versus Seattle, six targets were converted into only one catch for four yards. On the season, Jackson has 21 receptions on 53 looks, and his reception percentage of 40 percent is the lowest among any player with at least 25 looks on the season.
