Longtime NHL defenseman Poti announces retirement

AP - Sports

TORONTO (AP) -- Longtime defenseman Tom Poti is retiring from hockey after 14 NHL seasons.

Poti announced his intentions Thursday through a statement released by the NHL Players' Association. In 824 regular-season games with the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals, Poti had 69 goals and 258 assists.

The 37-year-old Poti was a 2003 All-Star with the Rangers, and helped the United States win a silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

''I was very fortunate to play in the National Hockey League for 14 years. It was a dream come true, and I had an awesome ride,'' Poti said.

Poti was a steady point-producer and a consistent team leader in shot blocking and penalty killing. He reached the playoffs seven times and posted 19 points in 51 career postseason games.
