Longoria set for tests Tuesday on sore left knee

The SportsXchange

The official word on Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria was that he had soreness behind his left knee and would undergo further testing Tuesday.

"Kind of a day-to-day gig right now," manager Joe Maddon said.

Longoria was hurt while caught stealing in the third inning. His foot got caught on the foot of Seattle Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan, who tagged him out to complete an inning-ending double play.

After the game, the Rays were bracing for news that the centerpiece of their lineup could be out for an extended period.

"I think obviously we're all worried about him," center fielder B.J. Upton said. "We don't know exactly what's going on ... but anytime you lose a guy like that in your lineup, it's a big blow."

Initially, the Rays are looking at using Elliot Johnson -- who took over at third base Monday -- or Jeff Keppinger at third. The Class AAA third baseman is Matt Mangini.

The irony to Monday's game was that after replacing Longoria, Johnson twice came up with chances to knock in a run and failed, then got a third chance and produced, singling home the game-winner in the 12th inning as Tampa Bay beat Seattle 3-2.

"Thank goodness I got the third opportunity and I came through," Johnson said. "Obviously disappointed with the first two that they didn't work out for me."
