Long-time assistant coach Jim Anderson is retiring from the Cincinnati Bengals after 29 seasons, the club announced.
Anderson joined the Bengals staff in 1984 after interviewing with club founder Paul Brown. Through the years, he was a part of a Super Bowl team in 1988 and survived a number of lean years and coaching changes with the organization.
Anderson was also a pioneer and inspiration of sorts for minority coaches gaining a foothold in the NFL.
"He's legendary. As an African-American coach, there wasn't a better role model for me," said one-time Bengals strength coach Ray Oliver of Anderson.
Speculation is that Hue Jackson, a former Bengals assistant who served one season as the Oakland Raiders head coach in 2011, could take over as the running backs coach. Jackson rejoined the Bengals staff last year, helping on special teams and with the defensive backs.
