On Tuesday, October 2, 2012, Eric LeGrand sent a tweet to Lolo Jones, an Olympic hurdler, that challenged her to a race. After she replied with some trash talk about how he would never beat her, she began catching some flak from followers. It seems she did not realize that Eric LeGrand was famously paralyzed in a football game where he had been playing for Rutgers University. He is paralyzed from the chest down. She did not quickly apologize but he indicated that there were no hard feelings anyway. This is not the first time that she has put her foot in her mouth on the social networking platform. Here is a look at four other tweets made by the runner that made headlines.
Earlier in 2012, Jones revealed on Twitter that she is a virgin. Some said that she might do better in races if she had sex and others questioned the truth behind her statement. In subsequent interviews the track star indicated that her childhood and, to some extent, her religion both factored into her choice. She stated that it has not been easy for her but she is committed to waiting until she is married.
Jones raised more eyebrows when, just a couple of months after announcing that she is waiting for marriage, she seemingly jokingly tweeted about wanting a duck to join her in a bath. This tweet came as she was participating in the 2012 United States Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon. The trials were held at the University of Oregon, where the mascot is a duck.
Gun Shooting Competition
During the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, and approximately one week after a shooter killed 12 people in Colorado, Jones once again made headlines for a tweet. After the United States men's team lost in the archery competition, Jones composed a tweet that basically indicated that she thought the United States would be better at a gun shooting competition. Some felt that this was insensitive but she attempted to explain that she was referring to hunting.
Tyson Chandler in her Bed
Though not as racy as it sounds, Jones tweeted a picture of basketball player Tyson Chandler in her bed, fully clothed, to demonstrate how small the beds were. The two were both competing in the Olympic Games in London, England. The player was more than one foot taller than the bed. Though the tweet was not overly controversial, it did make headlines.
Though Kristin Watt is not a fan of all sports, she does follow the news on most sports religiously. Major news events in sport do tend to ripple out to others and she makes sure that she never misses the big stories.
