COMMENTARY | It's time to admit that you goofed, Sepp Blatter.
This isn't about you saying that there is no racism in world football, your multiple sexist comments or you continuing to insist upon hosting massive tournaments in a country that really doesn't want you there. I'm referring to the 2022 Qatar World Cup that has been a disaster ever since it became official in 2010. By breaking down and admitting that world football's biggest party cannot possibly take place during the summer months in Qatar, you've finally shown the courage to say what just about everybody on earth has been thinking. Now is your opportunity to man up and go all the way in erasing what very well could be the biggest debacle of your tenure as FIFA president.
I wasn't in the negotiating rooms a few of years back when countries such as the United States and Australia were overlooked for a nation that I wouldn't visit in July if you paid for my airfare and accommodations. I'm sure that you and others in charge of making such a difficult decision had plenty of good reason$$$ at the time for picking Qatar as the host nation of the FIFA 2022 World Cup. Be willing to call the whole thing off now and choose a new location, and we'll all act as if this never happened.
You and I both know that scheduling a winter World Cup in this day and age is nothing short of ridiculous. Doing so won't just affect top-flight European leagues. It will have an impact on TV companies around the world that pay millions of dollars for the rights to air league matches. Certainly, you don't think NBC Sports will, if they still have the EPL US TV rights in 2022, be thrilled about stepping aside so FOX can show the planet's most-watched sporting event.
We'll make you a deal, Sepp: You give the United States the World Cup this country has always deserved, and we'll play along and pretend that you were duped by the idea of air-conditioned outdoor stadiums (like anybody would actually believe such a fairytale). The US hosting the tournament is the only logical solution to your problem. We have more than enough stadiums and lodging, and summertime in the States, while balmy, at times, is hardly unbearable. You also know that nobody in the US will be throwing projectiles in protest before, during and after games. The mere thought of groups of Americans rallying to complain about a soccer tournament is completely laughable. We'll all also agree to keep the vuvuzelas at home. It really is a win-win for all involved.
Everybody makes mistakes, Sepp, and US Soccer supporters are very forgiving people. Just ask Landon Donovan. Don't try to cover up this gaffe by inconveniencing all of world football and then suggesting that doing so is possible "if there's a will." The United States is undeniably the logical country to host the 2022 World Cup. I understand those in Qatar will be upset about this, but I'm confident that you and others at FIFA will find a way to smooth things over.
How do you say "bribe" in Arabic, anyway?
