Liverpool owners John W Henry and Tom Werner have spurned the opportunity to cheer on the Reds in this weekend's FA Cup semifinal showdown with Everton and have instead chosen to watch Boston Red Sox's first home game of the Major League Baseball season.

The pair made a three-day visit to Merseyside this week, which proved to be a brutal stay as they relieved director of football, Damian Comolli, and the club's head of sports medicine and sports science, Dr Peter Brukner, of their duties.

The Reds are eying up candidates to take over Comolli's role, and Netherlands legend Johan Cruyff has been linked with the post, but any move remains at a very early stage.

However, Henry and Werner are believed to want a replacement for the Frenchman installed at the club prior to the summer transfer window opening.

They also held talks with manager Kenny Dalglish over the indifferent campaign the Reds have endured in the Premier League. But despite the significance of the FA Cup semifinal in Liverpool's season, the duo have returned to America.

The Fenway Sports Group (FSG) owners have had its fair share of problems aside from Liverpool's disappointing season.

The Red Sox was booed off by its own fans after the final home game of last season, and after five losses from six away games at the start of this year, there had been a sense of hostility at Fenway Park.

Friday night saw the team record a 12-2 win in front of the pair, in a game designed to celebrate both the club's 100-year anniversary and the arrival of new manager Bobby Valentine.
