Goals from Daniel Agger and Daniel Sturridge gave Liverpool a 2-1 victory over nine-man Newcastle at Anfield on Sunday, but the Anfield crowd were left heartbroken come full-time, with Manchester City having defeated West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.
Liverpool needed Sam Allardyce's side to spring a shock in Manchester if they were going to get their hands on the Premier League trophy, but no such result was forthcoming.
The away side, however, will be pleased with their victory – achieved after Martin Skrtel had scored an early own goal and Shola Ameobi and Paul Dummett had been sent off – as it ensured a remarkable campaign ended on a high.
