Vilnius (AFP) - Lithuanian basketball star Sarunas Jasikevicius announced his retirement Friday after a record-setting career crowned by major European titles.

The 38-year-old guard will now serve as assistant coach for Lithuanian champions Zalgiris Kaunas, according to the club.

Jasikevicius won four Euroleague titles with three different clubs, played in the last four Olympics and led the Baltic nation's team to triumph in the 2003 European championships.

Known by fans as Saras, he spent the bulk of his career at European clubs, apart from a 2005-2007 stint in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers and Golden State Warriors.

More than just a national sport, basketball is often considered Lithuania's second religion after Catholicism.
