Lions re-sign CB Houston

Cornerback Chris Houston agreed to re-sign with the Detroit Lions, preventing a glaring problem area from becoming even worse.

"He's played some quality football for us, and has worked on some of the things early in his career that have been weaknesses," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said in February. "He's a vet, he's a pro, and he's a guy that's been productive for us."

Houston will sign a five-year deal but could move from left cornerback to the right side if the Lions add a premium cover player as expected. But there are high hopes for Bill Bentley in his second season. He's coming off of season-ending shoulder surgery but the Lions are extremely high on him as a potential lead cornerback.

"Chris this year added some things to his resume that he really didn't have before. There were a few games that he matched No. 1 wide receivers," Schwartz said. "Guys like Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, and people like that."

Houston earned $3 million in 2012. Details of his new deal weren't immediately available.

Houston has started in 42 of the 43 games in which he appeared since joining Detroit in 2010.
