Lions LB Tulloch: Young knows he's ill

The SportsXchange

Troubled former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young knows he has a mental illness, according to a former teammate.

Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch told the Detroit Free Press that Young once showed him paperwork explaining his disorder.

"He's aware of the situation that he's dealing with and he showed me a paper, and we went over it and I looked over it, and I understand it," Tulloch said. "A lot of people laugh about it and ke-ke-ke about it, but it's real.

"He has head issues, and the Titus Young when he came in as a rookie and the Titus Young now is two different people. It's kind of like when you look at him, he's looking through you. It's different. You can tell there's something going on in his mind, in his head, and I hope that he can get help."

Young was arrested May 10 in California for the third time in a week for allegedly breaking into a house. Less than a week earlier, he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, then later in the same day for trying to retrieve his car from a tow yard.

Young pleaded not guilty to eight criminal counts in Orange County, Calif. Among the charges were burglary, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Young's bail was reduced from $75,000 to $25,000.

He faces 7 1/2 years in prison.

Young's father, Richard, told two Detroit newspapers last week that his son needs help because he suffers from a mental health disorder.

He told the Free Press that his son has been prescribed the antidepressant Seroquel, which is used to treat bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.

New Lions running back Reggie Bush said on NFL AM on Friday that Young has been a topic of conversation in the locker room.

Backup quarterback Shaun Hill told the Free Press that he hopes Young can get better.

"I think we've seen throughout the previous years that NFL athletes or professional athletes in general have the same issues that everybody else in America has and we're not exempt from those type of issues," Hill said.

Young was drafted by the Lions in 2011, but released in February amid a decline in production and disputes with teammates.
