Smith slid down the depth chart last season after starting 10 games in 2010. He had five interceptions in ’10 and three in 11 games and one start last season.
In three NFL seasons, Smith has 80 tackles and 17 passes defensed. He played in 15 games as a rookie with the Broncos in ’09. Smith was a second-round pick.
Fluellen's versatility had bolstered the D-line depth thanks to his ability to play both tackle and end. He was with the Lions for all four of his NFL seasons after entering the league as a third-round pick in 2008.
Brown, a first-round draft pick by the Panthers in 2009, was picked up by Detroit this past offseason. However, he failed to do enough in preseason to earn a roster spot.
According to Tim Twentyman of detroitlions.com, Ryan Donahue, who averaged 42.7 yards per punt in eight games with the Lions as a rookie last season, also was told he was cut, giving the job to veteran Ben Graham. Twentyman said the Lions also are expected to release OG Rodney Austin, OG Pat Boyle, DE Ugo Chinasa, WR Patrick Edwards, OG Dan Gerberry, TE Alex Gottlieb, WR Nate Hughes, S Reshard Langford, WR Lance Long, DT Edmon McClam, LB Carmen Messina, WR Wallace Miles, CB Justin Miller, DT Tracy Robertson, WR Maurice Stovall, CB Ross Weaver and TE Austin Wells.
