Buzzing on Yahoo Sports:

Lions have crowded field with tryout players

National Football Post

The Detroit Lions didn’t take the end of their bye week off.

The front office didn’t, anyway. The Lions got busy with a mass workout of free-agent players in Allen Park, Mich.

According to Aaron Wilson of, the Lions put 24 players through tryouts, including Kevin Smith, the former Detroit running back who was not tendered a contract offer in March. It could be with Jahvid Best sidelined with a second concussion this season, the Lions want to take a look at a back that is familiar with their offensive scheme.

There were some other familiar names on the list, including former Cowboys guard Leonard Davis, wide receiver Antwaan Randle El and quarterback Brian Brohm. Wide receivers Sam Aiken and Terrence Toliver and defensive linemen Jovan Haye, Tony Brown and Chauncey Davis were also present.

It's not unusual for teams to bring in a host of players to take a look at during a bye week. They want to update their emergency lists and get a handle for what's available. But you rarely see a team list more than 10 tryout players at a time. The Lions supersized their workout.
