Liga MX players, coaches rally around Chepo

Mexico’s fans may have had enough of coach Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre following a string of poor results culminating in Sunday’s 2-1 Gold Cup loss against Panama, but various Liga MX players and coaches have come out in support of his continuation as El Tri’s manager.

“Six months ago he was the great wonder, now he is the worst,” Tigres coach Ricardo Ferretti told the press Monday. “I have total faith (in Chepo).”

Mexico legend Oswaldo Sanchez also backed De la Torre, under whom he captained Chivas to the Apertura 2006 title.

“We have to be calm because he has given good results, it’s just this year hasn’t gone well, but six months remain and everything can change,” stated the Santos Laguna goalkeeper.

Leon defender Jonny Magallon must have been disappointed not to get a call-up to either the Confederations Cup or the Gold Cup, but is also pleading for the Mexican soccer federation (FMF) to have faith in De la Torre.

“Chepo’s been a good coach, he’s had good moments and projects need continuity,” Magallon said.

Chivas owner Jorge Vergara – who fired Chepo just nine months after he won the title with Guadalajara - had no comment to make on the national team coach situation, according to El Informador.

With just nine goals scored in 13 games in 2013 and only two victories recorded in that time, Mexico takes on Canada in its second Gold Cup group game on Thursday.
