Lewis Hamilton and McLaren appear to both want to continue their current partnership in the Formula 1 series. McLaren has just presented the driver with a five year contract that contains a significant salary increase. Since it seems that both sides want to continue with the way things are, it will be interesting to see how Hamilton responds to the offer. Under the terms of the deal, Hamilton would now be making approximately $148 million over five years starting in 2013. This would average out to almost $30 million a year. With this type of a salary, he will be making quite a bit more than the second highest paid driver. Fernando Alonso earns approximately $24 million. The third highest paid driver, Sebastian Vettel, earns just under $19 million a year. That is a lot of money and it would rival any of the high paid athletes in the major leagues in the United States.
Hamilton first joined the team in 2007 and he has found significant success with McLaren over the years. The driver is currently at the top of his game and is a favorite to win this season. Having recently reconciled with his former girlfriend, Nicole Scherzinger, it appears that things are going well in his personal life as well. Though the two have been dating, on and off, since 2008, Scherzinger claims that they are not planning to get married right now.
If he agrees to the new contract, the driver will be making a crazy amount of money. Though he is a talented driver, the salary seems to almost be too much. It will be interesting to see what Hamilton does with the offer. Since he has indicated that he would like to stay with his current team, I would think that this would be enough for him to accept the contract. His salary is unlikely to be matched by any other team. With the economy as it is, there are probably not a lot of teams that could compete with that offer. I would be surprised if Hamilton ended up with any other team.
