Leonard Garcia and Cody McKenzie are set to fight at UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen on April 27 in New Jersey.
That is according to a Sunday tweet by Garcia, although the UFC had yet to make the bout official.
The bout is sure to be pivotal in terms of each fighter’s UFC tenure.
McKenzie (13-3) rocketed to a 12-0 start to his career, making his way to the Octagon via season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter. He defeated Aaron Wilkinson in UFC debut at the TUF 12 Finale, but has since gone just 1-3 in the Octagon.
McKenzie is coming off of a 31-second loss to Chad Mendes at last summer’s UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II, and needs to get back on track against Garcia.
Garcia (15-10-1) is perhaps in even more dire straights than McKenzie. He has lost four consecutive bouts and five of his last six.
Garcia is a “go-for-broke” fighter that is still in the UFC because his style provides for exciting fights that fans love to watch. At the end of the day, however, winning is still part of the game, and Garcia has found himself in short supply of victories over the past couple of years.
UFC officials recently surprised nearly everyone with the release of Top 10 talent Jon Fitch following his recent loss. Company president Dana White wasn’t done there, however, saying, “We have 470-something guys under contract. We have over 100 guys too many on the roster right now. The blood has not all been spilled yet.”
