What I learned re-watching the Steelers vs. Saints

Last night, while I was looking for things to do on a Tuesday night, I decided to flip through the DVR and watch something or clear up some space.

I decided to re-watch the preseason game of the Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the New Orleans Saints to fill the void in my evening. In case you didn’t know, it was still pretty good to watch the second time.

Here are a few things that I picked up watching this game the second time around.

The Ben Roethlisberger Effect

Roethlisberger made his first – and most likely – appearance in the preseason of 2016. It was pretty entertaining to watch the offense run under his care. With Roethlisberger on the field, the entire offense ran smoother and better than any given time with Landry Jones under center.

Since Roethlisberger is the leader of the team, of course this is going to happen. It was because of Roethlisberger taking the field that got me excited for the up-and-comers on this Steelers offense.

Eli Rogers Should be fun to watch

I’ve had my eye on Rogers during the preseason and watching Roethlisberger throw him the ball he looks like he will be fun to watch in 2016. I really have been impressed with his speed and athleticism.

Even though he doesn’t have the height of the suspended Martavis Bryant, he should be a good option for replacing the productivity that will be missed. Realistically Rogers will be the Steelers’ slot receiver, which is a great place to be for a player that was injured last season.

Jesse James is ready

With Ladarius Green heading to the PUP list for the first six weeks of the season, James will need to make an impact. Having the knowledge that Green won’t be available during my re-watch, James looked better the second time around.

I really believe that he will play similar to what Heath Miller was for this Steelers offense. I saw that a lot during the re-watch, especially on the first touchdown of the game. James also looked pretty good in the blocking game and this offense will continue like it did last year. He needs to bulk up a little more, but the tools are there and he’ll be a special player.
