On October 6, Landon Donovan suffered a knee injury in the Galaxy-Real Salt Lake match. After over a week of not knowing the extent of the injury, it turns out he has a bruised knee. This is great news for the Los Angeles Galaxy and potentially not so great news for the San Jose Earthquakes and the Seattle Sounders.
A Whirlwind of Events
After witnessing LD's injury, it was a little surprising to see him called up to the USMNT for World Cup Qualifiers. The Galaxy captain missed his MRI in Los Angeles and then jumped on a plane to join the National team in Miami. After further examination, Donovan was sent back to L.A.to have an MRI and was unable to play in the WC qualifying matches. Defeating Antigua and Barbuda 2-1 and Guatemala 3-1, the Yanks fared well in his absence. Now, the USMNT have made it into the final round of 2014 World Cup qualifying which begins in February.
After Donovan was sent home, Bruce Arena was optimistic that the injury wasn't serious. Arena has a tendency to be vague about players' injuries. In fact, although he reportedly knew the magnitude of the injury on October 12, he didn't clue everyone else in until the morning of Oct. 16. When asked about his silence, the Galaxy boss said, "What do we care what the reporters [want] and how specific it needs to be. ... There was no rush. We had no game, right?" Despite having to wait a little longer than expected, at least the news is positive.
Questionable on Injury Report
Despite the good news, Donovan is still questionable on the Oct. 16 MLS injury report. Thus, he may or may not be able to play against San Jose. If he doesn't play this weekend, he should be ready for the last regular season game against the Sounders. Luckily, Todd Dunivant is not on the report at all. The defender suffered a hip pointer while training and had to miss the Galaxy-RSL clash. Since A.J. DeLaGarza is out with a knee sprain, our back line needs all the help it can get.
The Galaxy are set to play the San Jose Earthquakes on Oct. 21. The Quakes have already defeated us twice this year. With Donovan in the lineup, we will have the best chance at defeating our league leading rivals.
