Landon Donovan: Brazil-hosted World Cup is 'truly special'

Having experienced three World Cups on three continents, Landon Donovan understands the prestige that comes with soccer's premier spectacle. But he also believes it will be particularly special to see the tournament hosted in the land of joga bonito.

"We all have a lot of respect for the Brazil in football," Donovan said Thursday during the U.S. national team's camp in Sao Paulo. "It's a great opportunity that you only ever get once, so it's truly special."

Donovan, 31, has been an elder statesman on the MLS-heavy squad that arrived at the USA's World Cup base in Sao Paulo on Jan. 13. The stint in Brazil, which ends Saturday, has given the U.S. players an opportunity to get acclimated to the facilities they will use next summer.

"We feel safe and accepted," Donovan said. "It was good to have these two weeks to get adapted before the World Cup."

The USA faces South Korea on Feb. 1 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
