On Friday, August 10, 2012, the Lancaster Barnstormers traveled to play the Sugar Land Skeeters in the first game of a six game series. The Barnstormers were looking to keep up what had been a dominating performance so far this season and the Skeeters were looking to catch up to the Barnstormers. The Barnstormers are currently at the top of the Freedom Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The team already won the first half of the season to get an automatic trip to the playoffs. The Skeeters are currently in second place in the Freedom Division. As a new team, the Skeeters have been playing well this season.
In the first game of the series, the two teams played in a relatively high scoring and close game. The Barnstormers got on the board first in the first inning. The run was matched and more in the third inning when the Skeeters went up three runs to take the lead by a score of 3-1. The Barnstormers answered back in the fourth by posting five runs to take back the lead by a score of 6-3. The Barnstormer added to the lead in the seventh by adding two more runs. The Skeeters added a run in the eighth to make the score 8-4. After the Barnstormers added one more in the ninth, the Skeeters tried for a comeback but managed to only get three runs. The Barnstormers took the game by a score of 9-7.
The second game, played on Saturday, August 11, was a great one. The Barnstormers took a substantial lead in the first inning by scoring four unanswered runs. The team added on more in the second. During the top of the third inning, the Barnstormers added one more run to make the score 7-0. This time, however, the Skeeters answered by scoring five runs during the bottom of the inning. By the end of the third, the score was 7-5. The Barnstormers would not let the Skeeters get closer than that, however and scored twice more, once in the fifth and once in the eighth. The final score was 9-5.
In the third game of the series, which was played on Sunday, August 12, the Barnstormers got a commanding lead and the Skeeters never seemed to show up. Though the first inning was scoreless, the Barnstormers first took the lead in the second inning and never looked back. After scoring an incredible six unanswered runs in the fifth inning, there was no question as to which team would win. The Barnstormers took the victory by a score of 9-0.
The fourth game went into the 11th inning on Monday, August 13, before there was a winner. The Skeeters got out to the early lead in the first inning with two runs and then further extended the lead with another run in the second. Though the Barnstormers managed to get two runs in the third inning, it seemed like the Skeeters might be taking the win. In the ninth inning the Barnstormers managed to get one more run to make the score 3-3. In the 11th inning, the Skeeters got the winning run and the final score was 3-2.
