De la Torre admits lack of confidence in Mexico camp

Mexico coach Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre believes his side is suffering from low confidence heading into today’s game against Brazil in the Confederations Cup.

“More than nerves, the team is lacking confidence and I think that is worse than being nervous,” Chepo said during Tuesday’s press conference.

El Tri need a win against Brazil to remain in the competition, but has shown little cohesion in the five matches since meeting up in late May.

Nevertheless, the Mexico coach signaled that now is the time to shed the negativity and go out looking for the victory against the Selecao.

“We prepare to defeat every rival in every competition,” said Chepo. “We believe that we can win, that’s why we’re here.”

Pressure is rising on the Mexico boss after a poor 2013, but De la Torre did get a boost Tuesday, when the president of the Mexican soccer federation (FMF) Justino Compean backed him publicly.

“The objective with Chepo de la Torre is Brazil 2014, he’s worked professionally. A lot of time the results aren’t in his hands,” stated Compean in an interview with Medio Tiempo.

Chepo added Tuesday that Aldo de Nigris had to leave the last training session before the Brazil clash early with a knee injury, putting his participation against the host nation in serious doubt.
