Louisiana-Lafayette's Elfrid Payton scored with 5.2 seconds left to give his team a 58-57 victory over Florida Atlantic and save the Ragin' Cajus from what would have been a bitter loss in Sun Belt Conference play Saturday night.
The Cajuns (10-17, 6-10 Sun Belt) led for nearly the first 35 minutes but saw the visiting Owls rally and take a five-point lead, 57-52, on Gregg Gantt's 3-pointer with 3:35 left in the game.
The Owls (12-16, 7-10) were still up by three points going into the game's final minute.
After Payton hit a pair of free throws, the Owls were clinging to a one-point lead at 57-56 when Pablo Bertone went to the free throw line for a one-and-one with 19.9 seconds remaining. He missed, the Cajuns rebounded, and, after a time out, set up the decisive play.
FAU saw its last chance to pull out the win disappear when Gantt turned the ball over with 0.6 remaining.
Gantt led all scorers with 18 points but was only six of 24 from the field.
Shawn Long led the Cajuns with 16 points. Payton ended up with 14.
The win gave the Cajuns a split of the two-game season series with the Owls.
