Disbelief, anger and Ryan Gosling's giggling: reaction to the La La Land-Moonlight Oscars mistake
In one of the most jaw-droppingly awkward moments in Oscars history, the wrong best picture winner was announced at the 2017 Academy Awards.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway told the audience that Damien Chazelle's La La Land had claimed the award - when in fact the winner was Barry Jenkins's Moonlight.
The mistake was only discovered after the team behind La La Land had taken to the stage.
Unsurprisingly, Twitter was quick to react to the embarrassing reversal, with a number of celebrities and viewers choosing to make topical jokes about the mess-up.
But La La Land's emails...

You know what the problem is -- millions of Academy members voted illegally.

The LaLa Land guy was like "let's keep making movies that celebrate diversity" and God was like, Hmm I have an idea

Others were just overcome by the sheer, unbelievable ridiculousness of the disaster....and quickly began suggesting other possible Best Picture winners.
It would have been a better ending if Suicide Squad had somehow actually won Best Picture.

Pretty big twist at the #Oscars tonight but it's good to know that the most deserving film won at the end. #BestPicturepic.twitter.com/pH0FIULOL0

The general consensus appears to be that, while La La Land is a fantastic film, Moonlight is perhaps the more deserving winner...although most people agree that the way the announcement played out was unnecessarily brutal.
"I feel bad for all involved: Warren, Jimmy, Marc Platt and the incredible La La Land team," said Neil Patrick Harris in a tweet earlier today.
I feel bad for all involved: Warren, Jimmy, Marc Platt and the incredible La La Land team. That said, congrats to Moonlight. It's brilliant.

Sucks to be La La Land to think you've won and you hadn't. Sucks to be Moonlight not getting their deserved ~winning~ moment.

I am genuinely so unhappy that LA LA LAND's crew had to go through that but I just burst into tears at how incredible MOONLIGHT winning is

Jessica Chastain, however, suggested that if a mistake had to happen, it was perhaps kinder that it was one that affected an entire group of people, rather than a lone individual.
Why didn't the producers of the show rush to the stage when the wrong winner had been announced?! I feel bad for #lalaland producers AWKWARD pic.twitter.com/bs2S7rj325

I'm also very sad for the MOONLIGHT crew. I wish that they had the full experience of winning best pic without the awkwardness of it all.

THANK GOD the wrong envelope didn't happen to an acting prize. Imagine a single teary actor on stage being humiliated. Stuff of nightmares

Conspiracy theories - and debates about just who is responsible for the colossal error - are also heating up.
The #Oscars mix-up was actually Leonardo DiCaprio's fault. he was supposed to give the envelope to Emma stone #leosfault

While it may take a while for the creators of La La Land to see the funny side, plenty of others whipped up jokes at the film's expense about the blunder:
"City of Stars are you shining just for me? "
sang La La Land.
"No. The shine is from me" replied Moonlight.— Sahil Shah (@SahilBulla) February 27, 2017
"Repeat after me..."

"Take thee Moonlight"

Ryan Gosling, however, who had just missed out on a Best Actor Oscar to Casey Affleck, found the whole thing quite funny:

Jordan: We didn't win. There is a mistake. Moonlight won.

Gotta love Gosling. Everyone else in the 'La La Land' crew was all "huh?" but he just smiled and clapped for 'Moonlight.' #Oscarspic.twitter.com/XOTF433gAO
