The result was not a surprise to me as an LA Galaxy fan. Columbus is a good defensive team with a solid goalkeeper in Andy Gruenebaum. The Crew were also playing in an emotionally charged atmosphere. The Galaxy were missing Designated Players David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The Galaxy were also on the road just three days after trouncing Chivas USA in the SuperClasico.
The Galaxy were lucky to be tied at zero after the first half with several shots by the Crew beating goalkeeper Josh Saunders but missing the net. Jairo Arrieta scored shortly after halftime. Arrieta shot from outside the box after running around and through the Galaxy defense. Sean Franklin made a splendid run of his own in the 64th minute to help the Galaxy level the score. At the end of his run, Franklin played a low cross to Robbie Keane who had slipped behind the Crew defense. Keane crushed the pass into the empty net for his team-leading 11th goal of the campaign.
It was good to see Keane come through as a veteran leader in an important match. Keane's goal was his sixth road goal of 2012, which is tied for second in MLS. Getting the draw put the Galaxy in a three-way tie for third place in the Western Conference. However, the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps both have played fewer matches than L.A. The recently reunited Galaxy championship back line also played very well for a second match in a row, recording three blocks, 10 interceptions and 39 clearances.
The Galaxy will have some time off before their next match, but will face a crowded stretch of the schedule starting on Aug. 23 when they host Isidro Metapan in L.A.'s first Group 5 game of the 2012-2013 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL). The Galaxy will then host FC Dallas on Aug. 26 before playing another CCL match against the Puerto Rico Islanders at the Home Depot Center on Aug. 29. An MLS match at home against the Vancouver Whitecaps follows on Sept. 1.
