The Los Angeles Galaxy play the Seattle Sounders on Aug. 5 at CenturyLink Field at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time on ESPN2.
Although the LA Galaxy are only one point behind the Sounders in the Western Conference standings, Seattle has two games in hand over L.A. The Galaxy (4-0-1) and Sounders (2-0-3) both enter the match on five-match unbeaten streaks in MLS play. The difference from the May meeting with Seattle that could put the Galaxy over the top is the the fact that Designated Players David Beckham and Robbie Keane, goalkeeper Josh Saunders and central defender Omar Gonzalez are available.
All-time, the Galaxy are 3-2-2 against the Sounders. The Galaxy are also 2-1-1 playing in Seattle. When the teams met on May 2 at CenturyLink Field, Seattle won 2-0. Eddie Johnson and Fredy Montero scored for Seattle within ten minutes of each other on either side of the first half to put the Galaxy away.
Beckham, Landon Donovan and Keane combined to score 11 goals and 11 assists in July. Keane was also named Player of the Month with five goals and four assists in six matches. When the three Designated Players are clicking, the Galaxy are unbeatable. With Gonzalez rounding into form, the back line could once again be a source of strength as well.
Johnson is the goal leader with nine and Mauro Rosales leads the team with seven assists. Michael Gspurning, who is 6-1-1 with three shutouts on the season, is back in goal for the Sounders. Seattle has missed the big keeper since he left the first match against the Galaxy this season with an injury. Since the May meeting, the Sounders also parted ways with Designated Player Alvaro Fernandez and signed Christian Tiffert. The German international could make his debut against our side on Sunday.
Seattle is unbeaten this year (9-0-1) when they score first but winless (0-5-4) when they concede the first goal. I'm hoping to see the Galaxy come out pressing for a goal from the opening whistle to see if that trend holds. Both teams have had this match circled and it should be an entertaining affair in front of a packed house.
