LA Galaxy Vs. Puerto Rico Islanders Preview: Galaxy's Depth Crucial to CCL Hopes: Fan’s Preview

Yahoo Contributor Network

The Los Angeles Galaxy host the Puerto Rico Islanders in a Group 5 match of the 2012-2013 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) on Aug. 29.

The Galaxy started this season's CCL off with a bang in the 5-2 win over Isidro Metapan on Aug. 23 at the Home Depot Center. Robbie Keane scored one goal before being shown a red card. David Beckham had a hand in three goals and Juninho scored a brace. The Galaxy should keep that run going against the Islanders.

CCL Series Information

The LA Galaxy and Islanders met in the 2010 CCL preliminary round, with the Puerto Rican team upsetting the Galaxy, 5-3, on aggregate on the strength of a 4-1 win at the Home Depot Center. Keane will miss the match for the Galaxy after being sent off for dissent in the first match of the CCL against Metapan.

Galaxy Leaders

Beyond Keane, the Galaxy also might not be able to lean on David Beckham (who has been ill) and Landon Donovan (who has been injured). Role players and fan favorites have been stepping up recently. Juninho has scored three goals in his last two matches. Michael Stephens and Jose Villarreal have also contributed assists in recent matches. Josh Saunders has been sharp in net for the Galaxy when shots have gotten to him. The Galaxy's championship backline being together again has produced the type of strong results Galaxy fans had come to expect from them last season.

Islanders Leaders

Nicholas Addlrey leads the Islanders and is 4th in the NASL in scoring this season with eight goals. Addlrey scored the only goal of Puerto Rico's opening 3-1 loss to Metapan. Richard Martin has been one of the better goalies in the NASL with a goals against average of 0.91. He allowed three goals against Metapan but faced a constant barrage of shots.

Both teams enter the game having played a recent match so there shouldn't be an edge in the area of fatigue. The Galaxy's depth is what should allow our side to get a victory in the match even if Puerto Rico tries to play defense and get a road draw.
