After their 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake, the Los Angeles Galaxy fell to fourth place in the Western Conference standings. The Galaxy have two matches remaining in the MLS regular season to try to move up into the top three. The Galaxy trail RSL by five points and the Seattle Sounders by two points.
Galaxy Playoff Picture
The Galaxy clinched a playoff spot after a 4-2 win over Toronto FC on Sept. 22. If the regular season ended today, the Galaxy would play the Vancouver Whitecaps in the play-in round. The Galaxy and RSL have played 32 matches while the Sounders have played 31 games. The Whitecaps have not yet clinched a playoff spot. Even if the Galaxy win both of their remaining games, it is possible our side could still fall short of the third seed and the playoff bye.
International Break Busy For Galaxy
The Galaxy are off from matches until Oct. 21 due to the international break. However, Ireland's captain Robbie Keane, Dan Keat (New Zealand) and Christian Wilhelmsson (Sweden) have left L.A. and joined their national teams for matches. Jose Villarreal is also away from the Galaxy participating in the Marbella Cup in Spain with the U.S. Under-20 National team. Landon Donovan was initially called up for the U.S. Men's National Team, but was ruled out due to a knee injury. Should the Galaxy concede that they probably will not make it to the third seed in the playoffs and rest the starters when MLS play resumes?
The Galaxy will have a difficult time defending their MLS Cup title no matter where they are seeded in the playoffs. I'd be in favor of giving the starters some kind of a break before the playoffs begin. One position where getting other players a look may not be a luxury but a necessity is on defense. Bryan Gaul and Tommy Meyer had to start in the Galaxy's match against RSL due to injuries to A.J. DeLaGarza and Todd Dunivant. DeLaGarza will likely miss the whole month of October but I expect Dunivant to be available for selection in the next match.
