CARSON, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy leapfrogged the Vancouver Whitecaps into third in the Western Conference, albeit with an extra game played, thanks to a 2-1 win on Satruday.
A few hours earlier, Mike Magee had caught Camilo Sanvezzo on 12 goals for the season. The Brazilian moved ahead again in the 19th minute. Lee Young Pyo pushed the ball forward and it nicked Russell Teibert into Camilo's path. The Brazilian calmly sidefooted past Carlo Cudicini for his league-leading 13th goal of 2013.
Roughly half an hour in, the Galaxy equalized. Omar Gonzalez headed on a Juninho free kick and the ball scraped an inch or so from Gyasi Zardes' hair. Jose Villarreal bundled it home on the line. The assistant referee raised his flag for offside, which would have been the case if the ball had touched Zardes, but the referee and assistant decided to let the goal stand after some deliberation.
Los Angeles kept pestering the Vancouver goal, with Zardes guilty of spurning several chances. The rookie came good on the hour mark, though. He raced onto a punted Todd Dunivant ball, cut back on the endline to trip up Brad Rusin and fired home at the near post before Johnny Leveron could meet him.
The Galaxy out-shot the Caps 22-4. Zardes and Villarreal each took six shots.
Vancouver has lost all five games it has played away against the Galaxy.
