U.S. national team midfielder Sacha Kljestan came through with a late assist to help his Belgian club Anderlecht salvage a 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw with Spanish side Malaga in its final European contest of the season.
Needing a win and some help from AC Milan against Zenit to clinch third place in Group C and a spot in the UEFA Europa League knockout round, Anderlecht was eliminated from European competition with the result.
Kljestan exited in style, though, sending in a low, curving cross from the right to forward Dieumerci Mbokani, who finished in the 89th minute to level the score. It was the second time during the Champions League that Kljestan set up Mbokani, doing so for the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Russian club Zenit St.-Petersburg on Nov. 6. The former Chivas USA man went 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card in his European finale.
American defender Oguchi Onyewu also played the full 90 minutes in the match, getting more time for Malaga on his season-long loan from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.
