Recommendation: Smith's optimism is a good sign, as is the fact that he avoided a high ankle sprain here, but his status will still be worth monitoring closely, as the Lions are counting on him early on this season, with Jahvid Best still sidelined and Mikel Leshoure slated to sit out the Lions' first two regular season contests.
Update: Smith said that the ankle injury he suffered Saturday was not major, Mlive.com reports. "My x-rays were negative," Smith said. "It just gets scary under the pile of those big guys laying on you. It's just a minor tweak, something I'm pretty sure I can get rid of quick. Just stay in the training room."
