Every University of Kentucky football fan wants the 2012 season to be special, but perhaps none do more than the Wildcats head coach himself, Joker Phillips.
At the Southeastern Conference Media Day on July 18, Phillips expressed the enthusiasm that he felt going into the fall, thanks to the momentum that winning the final game of the 2011 season provided.
"Our last four games last year we were 2-2. Of those last four games, what also makes you excited, for some reason or another, there were a lot of true freshmen, true sophomores, that were thrust into playing time, playing significant roles on our football team, whether it be offense, defense or special teams," Phillips said during a Media Day interview. "Of those last four games, you saw a lot of those guys making huge plays for us. That's what gets us excited."
It's true: One of the elements that last season's team prided itself upon was that several positions ran deep with talent. Even when some of the veterans took a few nasty hits early in the season, the younger and less-experienced players were able to step in and still make things happen. Versatility was a key, as well. Phillips hopes to maintain and build upon those essentials with this season's Wildcat crew, which is enough to make any fan proud.
For fans who wish to express that pride or give their two cents to Phillips or other SEC football coaches (including Nick Saban, Alabama; John L. Smith, Arkansas; Will Muschamp, Florida; Mark Richt, Georgia; Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss; and Steve Spurrier, South Carolina), will have the opportunity to do so in tomorrow's ESPN "Car wash" Tuesday (July 24). The event will be hosted on various media platforms, such as Twitter and ESPN.com, as the coaches respond in Bristol, Conn.
