Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 knockouts) was originally ordered by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), to defend his light-welterweight title against Zab Judah, but the two weren't able to come to terms. The IBF has now selected former champion Kendall Holt (28-5-0, 16 knockouts) as the mandatory challenger.
"We ordered Zab last Friday to have the contract signed by 12 noon today," IBF Championships Chairman Lindsay Tucker explained. "They didn't sign the contract at 12 o'clock, so we went to the next available guy, and that's Kendall Holt. So right now, Holt has been ordered to start negotiations with Peterson as the leading, available contender."
Peterson secured the IBF and WBA light-welterweight titles against Amir Khan in his last outing, but a failed drug test -- leading up to a rematch against the Brit -- ended up tainting the victory. After the failed test, Lamont admitted to taking testosterone pellets prior to his fight against Khan. The WBA ended up stripping "Havoc" of the title -- giving it to Khan -- but the IBF stood by Peterson.
Like Lamont, Holt hasn't been inside the ring in quite some time, but he couldn't be any happier with the opportunity to once again compete for a world title. Holt didn't seem bothered by Peterson's testosterone usage in the past, and he won't even require Olympic style drug testing (OSDT) when negotiations begin between the two camps.
The 30 year-old had an interesting take on the subject.
"If he [Peterson] wants to use steroids, that's his body," Holt said during a recent interview. "Steroids won't get him any advantage. To me they don't give a fighter an advantage. It won't make you hit harder, it won't make you see the punches coming any clearer, it won't make you move your head better, it won't make you have heart. … If he takes them, he takes them. I don't care if VADA is involved or not. My thing is to worry about Kendall Holt and what he can do to win this fight."
Peterson and Holt match up well against one another, and the fight between the two should be a competitive affair.
