Kelvin Gastelum vs. Tyron Woodley Lands UFC 183 Co-Main Event Slot

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Tyron Woodley Lands UFC 183 Co-Main Event Slot

The UFC 183 fight card featuring Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz has been steadily growing since the main event was announced. On Tuesday, the card took a leap forward with UFC president Dana White revealing the co-main event.

Kelvin Gastelum, fresh off of a victory in Mexico City over the weekend, will take the main support role in his toughest test to date, as he battles Tyron Woodley.

Gastelum (10-0) was the surprise winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 17, upsetting Uriah Hall in the finale.

The victory over Hall proved to be anything but a fluke, as Gastelum has won four consecutive bouts since then, two of them being finishes. He most recently crushed former title contender Jake Ellenberger, submitting him in the first round of their fight at UFC 180.

Woodley (14-3) recently caught some flack for having turned down a fight with Hector Lombard in Australia, but steps into the fight with Gastelum as one of the top 170-pounders in the division.

He has stumbled only twice during his six-fight UFC tenure, dropping a split decision to Jake Shields and unanimous decision to Rory MacDonald. Woodley bounced back from the MacDonald loss with a 1:01 TKO stoppage of Dong Hyun Kim in August.

With UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks putting his belt on the line against Robbie Lawler in December, the winner between Woodley and Gastelum could be poised for a title shot in 2015.
