Recapping NFL Week 7:

Kelly to let QB battle play out

The SportsXchange

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is in no hurry to declare a winner in the battle for the starting quarterback job.

Asked how long he feels he can wait before deciding on a starter for the Sept. 9 season-opener against Washington, Kelly said, "We're going to pull the trigger before we game-plan for the Redskins. We have to have a quarterback in place when we're really getting ready and getting into the meat and potatoes of what our game plan is going to be."

That means he could theoretically wait until after the Eagles' final preseason game against the New York Jets on Aug. 29 to name his starter. But since neither of the two candidates, Michael Vick nor Nick Foles, are likely to play in that game, he'll probably announce his starter after the third preseason game Aug. 24 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It continues to be too close to call. Vick and Foles both played two series in Friday's 31-22 preseason loss to the New England Patriots. Vick started and completed 4 of 5 passes for 94 yards, including a beautifully-thrown 47-yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson. The Eagles' offense gained 101 yards on their two possessions with Vick behind center.

Foles was 5-for-6 for 43 yards and engineered a 10-play, 66-yard touchdown drive. But he lost a fumble on his first series behind center.

"Overall, I thought they both played really well," Kelly said. "Nick, unfortunately, had that fumble on the series when we had the protection breakdown. But he came back and put a pretty good drive together. They both got us into the end zone, so I was pleased with how those guys played."

Foles will start Thursday night's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, with Vick coming in after him. Kelly hasn't yet named his starter for the Jacksonville game.

He said Vick started against the Patriots simply because Friday was his day to take the first snaps with the first-team offense. Kelly has been rotating them every day in practice during training camp.

During spring OTAs, Vick said he hoped Kelly would decide on his starting quarterback before the start of training camp. That obviously didn't happen.

Asked whether it will be difficult if the quarterback competition between him and Foles drags on for the entire preseason, Vick said, "Not at all. I am competing every day. I am competing tomorrow and the next day. I'm just trying to bring my 'A' game every time I'm in there."
