Kelly: Eagles' offense was 'slow'

The SportsXchange

PHILADELPHIA -- The NFL got its first regular-season look at Chip Kelly's up-tempo offense in the Philadelphia Eagles' 33-27 road win over the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

What they saw probably had a lot of opposing coaches' heads spinning.

The Eagles ran 30 plays - 30 - in the first quarter and 53 in the first half. They finished with just 77 offensive plays mainly because they tried to slow things down once they had a 33-7 lead, and also because their offense stalled in the second half. They had just five first downs in the final two quarters after registering 21 in the first two.

Asked where even he was impressed by the Eagles' offensive pace in the first half, Kelly said, "It was slow to be honest with you. We left the ball on the ground too much (after plays). We didn't get the ball to the officials (quickly enough). We could've sped things up from a process in between plays. And that's something we need to continue to work on."

In the first half, the Eagles had eight possessions and scored on four of them, including a one-play touchdown drive that last eight seconds, a two-play touchdown drive that lasted 34 seconds and a nine-play touchdown drive that lasted just 3 minutes, 13 seconds.

Can the Eagles keep up this kind of pace the entire season? Kelly doesn't see why not.

"I know our team is in shape," he said. "I know how we train. We can keep up what we're doing right now because we've been doing this since April."

--CB Bradley Fletcher suffered a concussion in Monday's game. His status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

--CB Brandon Boykin, who is the team's nickel corner, probably will move outside and play RCB if Fletcher can't play Sunday.

--CB Brandon Hughes was re-signed Tuesday after being released on Saturday. His contract is non-guaranteed since he was signed after the first full week of the regular season.

--QB Michael Vick tweaked his groin on a run against the Redskins, but is expected to practice this week.
