Karim latest unsung Colt making an impact

When the Colts in December re-signed RB-RS Deji Karim, who was with the team during training camp and the preseason, they weren't necessrily looking for help in the return game; Indianapolis set out to bolster its RB depth, with Donald Brown headed to injured reserve and Delone Carter still hobbled with an ankle injury.

Karim has yet to touch the ball as a rusher in three games with the Colts, but he was responsible for the biggest play of the game in the Week 17 upset of the Texans, when he returned a third-quarter kickoff 101 yards for a TD, just 12 seconds after Houston had taken its first and only lead.

A daily team observer told PFW that it didn't take much practice time to note that Karim is a different type of return man than what the Colts previously had on the roster. He's not a burner — though he showed plenty of wheels on the 101-yard gallop — but Karim makes up for a lack of elite speed with his decisiveness and urgency on returns.

GM Ryan Grigson is a leading candidate for executive of the year for the job he did in reloading the Colts in the draft and finding hidden gems like Jerrell Freeman and Cassius Vaughn via free agency and trades. The street free agents that Grigson has nabbed also have made invaluable contributiuons, with Karim suddenly giving the Colts as formidable a kick returner as they've had in quite some time.
