Kansas assistant named Florida Gulf Coast coach

The SportsXchange

Florida Gulf Coast hired Kansas assistant Joe Dooley to replace Andy Enfield as its head coach after the team's successful run in the NCAA Tournament this year, the school announced Wednesday.

Dooley, 47, has served on coach Bill Self's Kansas staff for the past 10 years. He also was the head coach at East Carolina from 1995 to 1999, posting a 57-52 overall record, and was an assistant at South Carolina, East Carolina, Wyoming and New Mexico.

Enfield left the take the Southern California job after leading Florida Gulf Coast, in its sixth year as a Division I program, on an improbable run to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

FGCU returns most of its players next season from a team that finished 26-11, won the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament and became the first No. 15 NCAA seed to reach the round of 16.

According to reports, Dooley turned down the Hofstra head coaching spot earlier this month.

Dooley will be formally introduced by FGCU on Monday at a news conference on campus.
