Kansas State linebacker Charmeachealle Moore won’t be wearing his familiar No. 52 on Saturday vs. Baylor. He’ll be wearing No. 8 instead.

Moore’s late father, Charmeachealle, died in September 2015 of a heart attack. The elder Charmeachealle was a running back for Baylor and wore No. 8. So his son is making the switch to honor his father.

He had to make a couple things happen for the switch to be official, however. Kansas State defensive back Duke Shelley wears No. 8. And, of course, coach Bill Snyder had to give the OK too.

“I talked to Coach Snyder about it and had a heart-to-heart with him,” Moore said via KansasCity.com. “I talked to Duke about it. They were all for it. It is just a blessing to be able to wear his number.”

Shelley will wear No. 4 against the Bears and both players will resume wearing their usual numbers for the rest of the season.

Charmeachealle Sr., who went by Carmichael in his Baylor career, rushed for 532 yards and four touchdowns as a senior in 1990. Baylor finished that season 6-4-1. Moore scored the game-tying touchdown in the tie vs. Texas A&M.

His son has 47 tackles so far in 2016 and is one of Kansas State’s most important defensive players. He said Saturday will be an emotional experience.

“I miss my dad,” Moore said, “and it is going to be a big game for me, very emotional, very high emotions. I wish he could be there to watch me, but he will be up in the sky watching me.”

Kansas State, 5-4, becomes bowl eligible with a win. The game in Waco kicks off at Noon ET.
